Zen on Paper: An Evening Talk & Exhibition
Friday, November 22, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Boundless Way Zen Temple, 1030 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA
Join us for an art exhibition and conversation at the Temple featuring the artwork of our own Temple Director, Dharma Holder Michael Sōkei Herzog.
Michael uses his Zen name, Sōkei, as his artist name. This exhibition offers a look at Sōkei’s unique portfolio of art created through the lens of Zen. His art intimately connects to his Zen practice and reflects many Zen teachings and imagery.
The evening will begin with a talk (at 7:00 pm) by David Rynick, Rōshi, on the connection between Zen and creativity. David Rōshi will share his thoughts on how creativity is part of Zen practice and how art can help us better understand our experiences. Following David Rōshi’s talk, Michael will explain how his Zen practice shapes his art, describe his distinctive style and process, and discuss what inspires his creativity. Afterward, there will be an opportunity to socialize over tea and refreshments.
The exhibition will include many examples of Sokei’s artwork: large framed prints, smaller 8.5 x 11 prints, postcards, and greeting cards. To see Sōkei’s art online, visit his website: www.sokei.xyz. All his art, including pieces on his website, will be for sale, and between November 22 and 29, 50% of the money from sales will be donated to the Temple.
Enjoy good company, and explore the connection between Zen and art. We hope to see you there.
